We are very excited to present to you our 2018 Summer Interns!! We hope that when they arrive here on May 27th that you will take some time to get to know them. Have them over to your house. Take them to coffee (if they like coffee; definitely should have asked that in the interview). Take them out to eat (I know they like to eat, who doesn't like that). Doesn't matter how you do it, just show them the love of Christ! We are excited about these 2!
This week I am at Recharge in Southern California with Wesley! I had a really unique opportunity yesterday to teach a group of teens and preteens. I was challenged with this task...on lesson, one day for 45 minutes...what do you teach a group of Christian students if you only have one lesson?
In Ephesians chapter 3 Paul uses the word "mystery" 4 times in the first 10 verses. Paul says there is this amazing mystery that God has withheld for generations that He has left me with the responsibility of feeling you about. This mystery that Paul is referring to is defined for us in verse 6. "This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus." The mystery here is the CHURCH! Paul continues to tell us about this mystery and says that not even the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places knew about this part of His plan (verse 10).
I had one lesson, one opportunity to share with these students...and I chose this...get ready for it...SATAN DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE CHURCH! God's secret weapon was and is the CHURCH. Did you get that? The church was never revealed until God was ready to unleash it on Satan! So here is what I left those students with and what I leave you with now...LOVE THE CHURCH. God has great plans for the CHURCH and for YOU!
Well summer may not have officially begun yet on the calendar, but for us at Woodson Chapel it is in full swing! We started off our summer with a 10 hour van drive to Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH. Been an awesome day, but pretty exhausted! And the way summer begins is the way it will continue to be all summer. Really awesome but really exhausting!
But even as exhausting as it is, it is my favorite time of year! This summer we will put on a VBS at Woodson, go on 2 Mission Trips (to Mobile, AL and Honduras), go to church camp, take a Junior/Senior Retreat, attend SEC, and have a Huge Back-2-School Lock-In to wrap up the summer, on top of our Cedar Point Trip. And while all of those things and places we go are good, they are not my favorite part of the summer. Here are 3 reasons I love the summer:
1. Lots of Time with Students. That means lots of time to build relationships. I will get to spend a lot of time investing in students lives...and their is nothing I love doing more than that!
2. Baptisms. The summer time always seems to be a time that gets kids thinking about becoming a Christian. Not sure if I completely understand why, but I love it! I will get to study the Bible this summer with many, many students who are ready to give their lives fully to the Lord!
3. Unity. Again, the summer time is a time where we are together a lot!! And there will be so many opportunities for relationships to be built among our students. I want to encourage any of our students who might be reading this to take the time this summer to get to know someone in the youth group that you don't know very well.
There are so many other reasons and things that I love about the summer...but after driving all day and then taking a group of 30 students to a theme park for the hours I wasn't driving...3 is all I can come up with right now. I think you will understand! And if you don't understand then come be a chaperone for us sometime! :)
So if you missed out on this years Spring Retreat, then you really missed a good one!! We took exactly 50 people to Western Kentucky Youth Camp in Marion, KY. We had a blast, and God provided us with some great weather!!
This year's theme was "Let Your Colors Show", and our key verse for the weekend was Ephesians 2:10.
"For you are His masterpiece created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand."
What a powerful verse!! We explored all of the different things that this verse means to us as Christians. Our fist lesson was on Friday night and was simply titled "His Masterpiece". We started out the weekend talking about how we are all children of God's and how He created us in His image...the most beautiful image we could ever be created in. We showed this amazing video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lMZBwkrxVY
And talked about God loving us despite all of our imperfections and how He sees past those things.
Saturday, was an extremely FULL day!! We started out the morning with colored pancakes! Then we had another devotional together where we talked about being God's Kaleidoscopes! The word kaleidoscope means "beautiful form to see." The idea here is that we were created to reflect the beautiful form of Jesus. That is our most beautiful form to be seen! Saturday was also full of lots of colorful games...Hippitty Hop Jousting, Color the President and a game called Color Zombies.
We also got to enjoy a really cool paint slip-n-slide (that didn't work...most of the teens ended up rolling down the hill). But at the end of the slide we placed a white sheet and created this beautiful artwork! Showing us just how God can take something as messy as our lives and create a beautiful masterpiece...HIS MASTERPIECE!
Saturday nights lesson to help us remember that God created us on purpose and that He planned for us to be here. In understanding that we must start to see ourselves how God sees us ("Through God-Colored Glasses") and not how Satan tells us we look. Paul tells us in Colossians 3:12 that God sees us in 3 ways: CHOSEN, HOLY (set apart), and DEARLY LOVED! Once we understand that we are able to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, gentleness, humility and patience...instead of seeing ourselves how the enemy tells us we look (WORTHLESS, LOSER, GUILTY, REJECT, FAILURE).
Sunday was an amazing morning of worship. I just love worshipping with our teens!! We ended with a lesson called "Let Your Colors Show". The whole weekend built up to this lesson. Once we realize that we were created in Christ and to reflect Christ, and once we start viewing ourselves as God sees us, then we are ready to let our colors show. You were "created in Christ Jesus FOR GOOD WORKS..." We leave fingerprints everywhere we go but what kind of fingerprints are we leaving behind? Are they fingerprints that point to God (Matthew 5:16) or fingerprints that point to ourselves?
We are given opportunities to let our colors show for God everyday...but so often we hide those colors out of shame. It is time to LET YOUR COLORS SHOW!!
